Customer & Partner Portal Development

A portal gives customers or partners a place to complete specific work with your organisation. Focus each journey on the information visitors need, the actions they can take and the boundaries that protect different customer accounts.

Choose customer and partner portal workflows

Start with repeated requests such as checking an order, sharing a document or submitting a service issue. Define what the visitor can complete independently and when staff involvement is required. A portal should reduce uncertainty instead of simply moving an internal form onto the internet.

Protect each account's information

Agree the relationship between organisations, users and records. Invitation, access changes and account closure need clear rules. Permissions must apply to every request for data, including downloads and exports, so a user cannot reach another customer's information by changing a record identifier.

Show progress across connected systems

Bring approved information from the systems that own it, with visible status and update times. Failed submissions and unavailable integrations need useful feedback and an investigation path. Test the whole journey from the external user's action to the internal team's response and back again.

Project deliverables

  • Customer or partner journey map
  • Account and permission definitions
  • Portal screens and integration contracts
  • Access, submission and recovery checks

Service questions and answers

Which customer tasks suit a first portal release?

Choose repeated tasks with clear inputs and outcomes, such as checking an order or submitting a service request. Identify what visitors can complete independently and where staff involvement is needed. A focused journey is more useful than exposing a large collection of internal screens.

How can customers be restricted to their own information?

The backend must check permitted organisations and records on every request. Navigation alone is insufficient. Test direct access, search, downloads and exports, including account changes, so a person cannot cross customer boundaries by altering an identifier or using an old link.

Can a portal work with existing internal applications?

Yes, where supported interfaces and permissions allow the required actions. Identify which system owns each record and how updates are confirmed. The portal should show pending or unavailable information honestly instead of creating a second source that quietly conflicts with internal records.

What should happen after a customer submits a request?

The visitor needs confirmation of receipt and an understandable next step. Internally, the request needs an owner and status reflecting actual progress. Connect those views and test failed handovers so a successful form submission is not mistaken for delivery of the requested service.
