# IoT Data Processing & Alert Workflows

Receiving a reading is only the start of the work. We help your system check incoming information, keep a usable history and notify the right people when an agreed condition needs attention.

Give every alert a reason, an owner and a clear next step.

## Validate IoT readings before processing and alerts

A malformed message or unexpected unit should not silently become a valid reading. We define the checks at the receiving boundary, including device identity, required fields, time information and acceptable values. The system needs a deliberate response to rejected data so a developer can investigate it. Duplicate and late messages also need rules. A measurement received after an outage may belong in the history without being treated as a new live event or triggering the same notification again.

- Message validation and rejected-data handling
- Rules for duplicates and delayed readings
- Consistent measurement names, units and timestamps

## Keep history at a useful level of detail

Different questions need different records. An operator investigating a recent incident may need individual readings, while a monthly review may need a summary. We agree what to store, how long to keep it and who can access it. Expected device counts and reporting frequency help estimate the volume. We also consider how filters and exports will perform as that history grows, and which details must remain available to explain an alert or a change made by a user.

- Retention rules for readings, events and user actions
- Query patterns for charts and operational reports
- Storage assumptions and access boundaries

## Build alerts around a response

An alert rule should describe more than a threshold. It should say how long a condition must last, whether repeated events are grouped and when the issue is considered resolved. We discuss recipients, acknowledgement and escalation where needed. For example, a reading that moves briefly across a limit may need different treatment from a condition that continues for several reporting cycles. Notification delivery and operational resolution remain separate: sending an email does not mean someone has dealt with the issue.

- Threshold, persistence and repeat-notification rules
- Recipient groups and acknowledgement responsibilities
- Recorded delivery failures and unresolved conditions

## Project deliverables

- Validation rules and a documented data-processing flow
- A history model with retention and access decisions
- Configured alert conditions and follow-up states
- Scenario tests covering missing, repeated and late information

## Our project approach

-

### Agree what each reading means

We review sample messages and operational expectations with your team. This establishes the difference between a normal measurement, an invalid value and a device that has stopped reporting.

-

### Connect processing and action

We implement the agreed data checks, storage and event rules, then connect the chosen notification channels. The application keeps the current event state available to authorised users.

-

### Exercise the uncomfortable cases

We test repeated messages, recovery after a gap, changing thresholds and unavailable notification services. Results help tune the rules before they are used across a wider deployment.

## Information to plan your project

- Representative messages and expected reporting intervals
- Meaningful event conditions and the people responsible for them
- History requirements, expected volumes and notification preferences

## Service questions and answers

### Can missing readings create an event even when no threshold has been crossed?

Yes, once we define the expected reporting interval and the delay that matters. A silence event should be separate from a measurement outside its normal range. The design also needs a clear rule for reconnection, so the system can record recovery without treating a late historical reading as current evidence.

### How do we reduce repeated notifications for a condition that has not changed?

An alert rule can include how long a condition persists, how related events are grouped and when another notification is justified. We agree recipients, acknowledgement and closure as part of that rule. These choices should reflect the response people can actually make, rather than simply sending a message for every incoming reading.

### Should a delayed batch of readings trigger all the same alerts again?

Not automatically. The receiver needs to distinguish measurement time from arrival time and recognise records it has already processed. We agree whether late data belongs only in history or should still trigger a defined review. Replay tests help check that reconnecting a device does not create duplicate events or misleading notifications.

### How do we choose notification channels without unexpected running costs?

Agree who needs each message, its urgency and the expected volume before selecting channels. Email, SMS and other providers may have account and usage requirements. We identify ownership, quotas and likely cost drivers separately from implementation, and define what the application should report if a provider rejects or delays a message.

### Can an alert rule also perform an automatic action on the device?

That is a separate capability, not an automatic extension of monitoring. The equipment must support the command and its response path, and the action needs an agreed design and appropriate validation. We distinguish sending the request from knowing its result, including what should happen when communication or power is interrupted.

### How much device history should the application retain?

Start with the questions your team needs to answer, such as investigating a recent event or comparing monthly patterns. Individual readings and summaries serve different purposes. We agree retention, access and exports against expected reporting volume, while preserving the evidence needed to explain important alerts and user actions.
